Coney Island was absolutely the place to be last weekend. The area in Brooklyn gets a lot of hype around July 4th weekend due to the annual Nathan’s Hotdog Eating Contest (Hot Dogs are NOT SANDWICHES by the way) and the Cosmos were able to capitalize. According to the team’s attendance numbers, New York had its highest attended home game of the season, bringing in a total of 6,734 fans. This match is significantly higher than their last home match (vs. PRFC 4,927) and even higher than their home opener (vs. Miami FC, 6,274). Summer has been kind to the Cosmos as attendance numbers have been on the rise since June 10th.

New York was able to capitalize on the big weekend by having a huge presence on Coney Island throughout the weekend. The team cheekily began to convert NYCFC fans, allowing them to swap shirts for a new Cosmos team. The Cosmos also partnered with the Discovery Channel to make their July 4th matchup “Shark Night” to celebrate the upcoming Shark week. Fans who attended the game were also treated to July 4th fireworks after the game.

It’s great that the Cosmos were able to step up their marketing and social media presence last weekend and take advantage of the opportunity available to them. Hopefully a great experience at MCU converted some casual spectators into diehard fans. The Cosmos begin the NASL Fall Season July 29th against Miami FC.
