Match preview: Cosmos vs Deltas

Cosmos look to put forgettable week behind them with win against San Fran

Tomorrow, the Cosmos return to NASL action as they face off against the San Francisco Deltas. After elimination from the US Open cup by Reading United and a controversial mid-season friendly in Saudi Arabia, the Cosmos are looking to get back on the right track. If they beat the Deltas and win their game in hand, New York could find themselves atop the NASL Spring Season Table.

Since playing the Cosmos last in April, the Deltas have lost two of their last three matches. San Francisco sits even with the Cosmos on points with twelve, but lacks New York’s game in hand. New York’s plus one goal difference separates the two team in NASL standings. Another loss could be worse news for San Francisco than T.J. Miller leaving Silicon Valley.

This Memorial Day weekend, the Cosmos will celebrate Military Appreciation night. The Cosmos showed their support for our troops by going to events in celebration of Fleet Week. The Cosmos will celebrate Danny Szetela and Jimmy Maurer’s 100th appearances for the club on Saturday. They join Carlos Mendes and Ayoze in the modern era Cosmo’s Centennial Club. Congratulations to the pair!

Player to watch

Emmanuel Ledesma, who turned 29 midweek, has been one of the brightest sparks to the Cosmos offense of late. He won the reverse fixture for the Cosmos with his silky smooth chip goal. In New York’s last NASL match against Puerto Rico FC, Ledesma recorded two assists; the same number as the amount of headed goals San Francisco conceded to the Jacksonville Armada. Douglas Zimmerman of SFGate commented on the team’s weakness towards crosses in his latest match report. These conditions could lead to Ledesma having a field day, granted someone can put the ball home.

Match Prediction

Like the Cosmos this year, the Deltas play their best away from home. These two teams are pretty evenly matched and this one could go either way. I’m feeling a 1-1 split.

Kick off for tomorrow’s match is at 7:00. The game can be watched nationally on Bein Sports as well as on MSG +.
