Cosmos 2 Miami FC 0: Three Things We Learned

Takeaways from the Cosmos’ first win of the season

@NYCosmos

The Cosmos were able to grab their first three points of the season with their 2-0 win against Miami. Here’s some key takeaways from the match:

Jimmy Maurer is the Cosmos’ most important player

Without a doubt, Jimmy Maurer has stepped up for the Cosmos when it has mattered most this season. Last night Jimmy picked up his second clean sheet, making eight (!) saves to keep Miami off the scoreboard. His double save in the first half will definitely be remembered as a save of the season candidate. If he keeps this form up, Maurer could definitely be a team of the season keeper in the NASL.

Cosmos defense still problematic

The Cosmos played Ochieng and Jakovic again at center back. The pairing did significantly better their second time around, but there are still issues in the back. Despite not scoring Miami dominated possession and had a whopping twenty two shots on goal, eight being on target. Don’t let the Cosmos two clean sheets this season fool you, there is still work to be done in the back. However, I’d imagine with time we will see chemistry build and an improvement in defense.

Three points and a goal is a monkey off the Cosmos’ back

The Cosmos not only scored their first goal of the season in Miami, but also had their first shot on target all season! Putting two past title favorites Miami FC in South Beach is huge for the Cosmos, especially after Miami’s dominance in the previous fixture. Despite their early struggles, the Cosmos still find themselves in the hunt for the NASL Spring title and the automatic playoff berth that comes with it. The Cosmos will have a big test April 22nd when they face top of the table Jacksonville Armada in Coney Island.
