The New York Cosmos started their preseason with a trophy in hand as they defeated Atlantico FC 1-0 at Leonel Plácido Stadium, in their first preseason match. In the match we weren’t able to see too much because of a spotty stream, but a Cosmos team filled with veterans and trialists alike were able to pull out a preseason victory.

Big performers in this math included Walter Restepo whose presence of the right wing gave Atlantico problems during the first half. A mesmerizing chip from Danny Szetela almost found its way into the net but just missed. Juan Guerra was able to break the deadlock with a free kick in order to give the Cosmos the lead, and Brian Holt made some key saves to retain it. Atlantico was almost able to tie the match late, but an equalizer was ruled offsides.

Before the match and throughout the Dominican Republic trip, The Cosmos have been spotted wearing Inaria gear in training. Inaria, who designed kits for other NASL teams including the Minnesota United last season, appear to be the favorites to dress the Cosmos in their 2017 campaign. In today’s match, however, The Cosmos wore the Under Armour kits of the 2016 season.

New Defensive Signing Inbound?
Cosmos Captain Carlos Mendes did not wear his usual number 4 today, but opted for number 12. Could he be giving the number up for a big defensive signing? Maybe he just felt like changing it up… We will see.
