A game that seemed all but ordinary at the half, ended in record setting fashion. The first place Cosmos combined for five goals in the second half to defeat Carolina 6-1. A miscue caused a Railhawk goal where there was little Jimmy Maurer could do to stop Matt Fondy from squeaking it by. Cosmos would answer back less than two minutes later that would ignite an onslaught of cosmic fury. Juan Arango kicked things off when Andres Flores found him unmarked two minutes after Carolina opened.
Carolina either lost complete focus or Cosmos decided to channel their inner 1970’s squad. Gio would say the latter:
Quality play it was. Jairo Arieta found the back of the net twice as did Arango. The attacking play was fluid and was firing on all cylinders. It seemed everyone was showing up to the party. Winger Sebastián Guenzatti hit the dance floor in the 93rd minute for his first goal of the season.
Our man of the match has to be Andres Flores. Three assists and a goal to his name make this his best match of the year. Flores is a barrel of talent only just starting to be tapped.
This puts NY tied for 1st place (7-2-2 Fall, 13-2-6 Overall) after FC Edmonton drew on Sunday. Cosmos host Indy Eleven Wednesday so hopefully they can keep the momentum going. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at Shuart Stadium.
