Match Preview: New York Cosmos vs Carolina RailHawks

The New York Cosmos will look to continue their four game undefeated streak this weekend against the Carolina RailHawks.

After last week’s extra time stunner in Puerto Rico, the Cosmos hope to keep their momentum going against the Carolina RailHawks. After a turbulent end of July, the Cosmos have yet to lose in August, with three wins and a draw in their last four games. New York still chase FC Edmonton in both the Fall and Combined standings. Carolina are also coming in hot, as they shocked Spring season champs Indy Eleven 3-2 in their last match. The RailHawks currently sit mid-table, but are in striking distance of the last playoff spot. Thanks to a game in hand, a win against the Cosmos would place them two points behind fourth place, currently held by MLS-bound Minnesota United FC.

Players to Watch

Both the Cosmos and the RailHawks have two players in the NASL team of the week. The Cosmos are represented by Jairo Arrieta and Andres Flores, both of whom scored against Puerto Rico. Defender Steven Miller and striker Omar Bravo make it in for Carolina.

The tag-team of Matt Fondy and Omar Bravo will be aiming to continue their red hot form against the Cosmos. Both players have scored in the RailHawks’ last two matches. Bravo, who joined the RailHawks this fall, is C.D. Guadalajara’s all-time leading goalscorer. Matt Fondy, who also just joined Carolina this fall, is tied for the team lead in goals with five after scoring in his last three matches.

Two important players could return to the Cosmos’ lineup this weekend. Adam Moffat, who has scored five Fall season goals, is eligible again after serving a one-match red card suspension. Center-back Roversio return from injury in the team’s last match. Do not expect him to play a full ninety minutes, but he might surpass the thirty four minutes of action he has seen this year.

Although the Cosmos have gone undefeated in August, they have only recorded one clean sheet. Jimmy Maurer will be looking for his eighth shutout of the season on his bobblehead night.

Score Prediction

I think the Cosmos will keep their win streak alive and beat Carolina 3-2. Maybe the Cardiac Cosmos will score another late winner? Either way expect lots of goals and a fun match. Kickoff is Saturday at 7:30 at Shuart Stadium. The match will also be televised and streamed by One World Sports.
