It's been an odd winter to be a fan of the New York Cosmos. The club won the North American Soccer League title by defeating Ottawa Fury FC in November, watching it's two most recognizable players retire as champions. Since then, we've mostly heard about departures from the club, with no new signings announced until the Michael Lahoud loan, followed shortly by Jairo Arrieta.
Just as I was starting to think about how Arrieta would fit in the New York striker rotation, the answer became a bit more obvious. We knew that the club was still in talks with hat trick hero Gaston Cellerino about a second season in green and white, but reports have emerged suggesting that this won't be happening, and that Cellerino will spend next season in Club Bolivar.
If accurate, this leaves the Cosmos with just Lucky Mkosana and Arrieta up top at the moment, meaning that they'll still be looking for strikers. On the flip side, Cellerino was using an international roster spot, meaning that the club have one more of those to work with as they seek to replace him.
At this point, there has not been confirmation from any of the parties involved, but I'm sure we'll have some shortly, one way or the other. Stay tuned...
