New York Cosmos sign another star to a new contract

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, the New York Cosmos announced that they have agreed to a contract extension with another one of their core players. This time, the player in question is goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer. As usual with the club, specifics of the agreement have not been disclosed.

Maurer has been the club's first-choice keeper since the start of the 2014 season, and was the primary backup to Kyle Reynish during the club's inaugural, title-winning campaign. He has been one of the Cosmos' most consistently excellent players during that spell, winning NASL Best XI honors in 2014, and playing well enough to be considered again in 2015.

Maurer had the following to say about the new contract:

"I’m pleased that the contract talks went smoothly and that it’s all sorted out with the club. I’ve been with the Cosmos since 2013 and want to continue to be a part of things going forward. There’s no question that this is where my family and I want to be for the foreseeable future."

I was a bit concerned that an MLS side would make a play for Maurer this winter, so this is great news as far as I'm concerned. Here's hoping that Jimmy continues his strong play throughout the term of the new contract, as well.
