Cosmos to Face Red Bulls in Fifth Round of the U.S. Open Cup

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

One New York based MLS club down and another one to go.

Less than 24 hours after the Cosmos defeated NYCFC, the Cosmos learned that they will battle the New York Red Bulls in the round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup. This will be the second consecutive year that the Cosmos will see the Red Bulls in the Open Cup. Last year the Cosmos defeated the Red Bulls 3-0 in a one sided contest held at Shuart Stadium.

This year's match will take place at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on either June 30 or July 1.

The Cosmos defeated NYCFC on Wednesday 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout after rallying from a 2-0 deficit. The NASL club boasts a perfect 2-0 record against their MLS rivals The Red Bulls seemed disinterested in taking the Cosmos seriously last year, but one would expect them to have a much more serious tone in the rematch.
