The New York Cosmos started their 2015 US Open Cup campaign with a victory on Wednesday, defeating Jersey Express SC by a 3-0 scoreline at St. John's University's Belson Stadium. That victory sets up a match that should appeal to a national audience, when the boys in green play host to New York City FC.
For Gio Savarese's side, there were several good things to take note of during the match. Most importantly, two players made successful returns from injury, and appear to be ready to go this weekend against Minnesota United. Marcos Senna made his first appearance since leaving early in the draw against Carolina, while Hunter Freeman has been struggling with injury this season, but returned to his starting position on the right side of the defense on Wednesday.
The match also marked the professional debut of US U17 star Haji Wright, who drew a penalty late in the match that was converted for the Cosmos third goal. Well done, Haji.
