The Cosmos go a monkey off of their back last weekend when they defeated the San Antonio Scorpions, and Raul has already been honored as the league's player of the week following his impressive performance in that match. The Spaniard was also unsurprisingly named to the North American Soccer League's Team of the Week on Wednesday, where he was joined by two other teammates.
In addition to Raul, Adam Moffat and Roversio were honored by the league. Roversio scored the second and might have had his finest match yet in a Cosmos' shirt, while Moffat made his first start of the season in the absence of Marcos Senna. Here is what the league's website had to say about the trio:
Rovérsio (New York Cosmos) – The Cosmos were facing a resurgent side, the San Antonio Scorpions, on Saturday. The Brazilian international and his teammates completely nullified the Scorpions offensive front, holding a clean sheet in a 3-0 win that pushed New York closer to a Spring Season Championship. The clean sheet also moved goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer to the all-time shutout list in the NASL Modern Era with 18, adding an extra bonus for the defender’s effort. Rovérsio also scored the second goal of the match for the Cosmos off of a header late in the second half.
Adam Moffat (New York Cosmos) – Stepping in for Marcos Senna is no easy feat, but the Scottish native allowed the Cosmos to not miss a step in their 3-0 win against the Scorpions. Moffat helped anchor the midfield allowing the creative players to move forward and was the perfect shield for the back line in the win.
Raúl (New York Cosmos) – Scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot in the first half, Raúl once again was a focal point of the Cosmos’ attack. The Spanish international had a part to play in the third goal, which sealed the win, by lofting a ball into the box that was headed on by Lucky Mkosana and ultimately headed into the back of the net by Leo Fernandes. The play of the veteran certainly took the wind out of the sails of a Scorpions side that was finding its direction and form in the Spring Season. For his efforts, Raúl also was honored as the Player of the Week.
As always, congratulations to the Cosmos' trio, and hopefully we'll continue to see multiple players honored as the season progresses.
