The New York Cosmos exercised some demons on Saturday evening, defeating the defending champion San Antonio Scorpions by a 3-0 score to remain comfortably atop the NASL table. The victory over the Scorpions was New York's first since 2013, as they lost all four meetings to San Antonio last season.
The home side got excellent performances from several key players, including goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer, who tied a NASL modern-era record with his 18th clean sheet. That performance wasn't enough to surpass Raul as Player of the Week, however, as the Spaniard's work in front of goal helped make it a comfortable victory in the end.
Raul opened the scoring from the penalty spot, waiting for the keeper to commit before going the other way. He then played the key pass in the Cosmos' third goal, a cross that Lucky Mkosana headed into the path of Leo Fernandes, and put the game to bed.
Raul, as selfless as ever, had the following to say about the award:
"The team is working very hard and we are focused on finishing the spring season strongly.I'm happy to be part of what we have achieved so far, and hopefully we can continue to do well."
As always, congratulations, and hopefully he'll play a key part in another win on Wednesday.
