New York Cosmos' captain Carlos Mendes named NASL Player of the Week

It's not that often that center backs score. It's even more rare when center backs score more than one goal in a match. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Carlos Mendes has been named the North American Soccer League's Player of the Week after scoring a brace against FC Edmonton on Sunday.

For the Cosmos' captain, it's the second time in the past two seasons in which he's bagged more than one goal in a match. The first occurred last season in the opener against Atlanta, where Mendes also scored a brace en route to being honored by the league.

Carlos had the following to say about the award:

"It's been a great week for me personally and for the team as well. All of the guys are working really hard, and it's an honor to be recognized in this way by the league."

As always, congratulations on some well deserved recognition, which we hope is the first of many such awards for Mendes this season.
