New York Cosmos trialist lands with Whitecaps FC

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Former New York Red Bulls midfielder Ian Christianson had been on trial with the Cosmos recently, but it turns out that he won't be playing in the North American Soccer League this season. Instead, Christianson has latched on with Whitecaps FC 2, who will be playing in USL this season.

The 22-year old midfielder has spent the past two seasons with the Red Bulls, making a grand total of two starts and three substitute appearances. Aside from his time with the Red Bulls, Christianson had no local ties, paying collegiately at Georgetown before being drafted 22nd overall in the MLS draft.

The Cosmos are well stocked in the midfield already, so Christianson was likely nothing more than depth ahead of the NASL season. I'm sure they'll still be looking for reinforcements, but that's probably not the highest priority ahead of the opener. Speaking of that opener, it's now just seven days away.
