Cosmos add Paraguayan center back, continue to look at other options

Andy Marlin-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Cosmos announced an addition to the 2015 squad on Friday, adding Nueva Chicago center back Samuel Caceres to the squad to bolster the heart of the defense. Caceres will join on loan, with the club rumored to have an option to make the deal permanent at the conclusion of the 2015 season.

Caceres turns 26 in seven days, and should be in the prime years of his career at this point. He sounds genuinely excited to be joining the Cosmos:

"I was drawn to New York by the vision of the Cosmos organization. I’m looking forward to getting started with training camp and facing a new challenge in the U.S. at this stage of my career."

Head coach Gio Savarese also had some nice things to say about the move:

"Cáceres adds more quality to our back line. He’s had some valuable experience in Argentina and is in the prime of his career, but he’s a player that we anticipate will continue to develop and improve. We expect him to compete for playing time here."

Hopefully, the health of Carlos Mendes and Roversio make minutes hard to come by for the Paraguayan, but if called upon, it's nice to know we're beginning to add some depth to the heart of the defense. The club is also still looking at Canadian international Nana Attakora, who is currently training with the group.
