The NASL season comes to a close on Sunday, and as such, the regular season awards have all been awarded. While the New York Cosmos found themselves well represented in most Teams of the Week, they only had one player named to the league's Team of the Season.
For the second consecutive season, Cosmos' captain Carlos Medes was recognized by the league for his outstanding body of work. Unfortunately, he wasn't joined by any other New York players despite the team finishing atop the NASL table, and making it to the title match.
Here's what the league's website had to say about Mendes:
Carlos Mendes (New York Cosmos) – For a second straight year, the Mineola, N.Y., native was selected to the Best XI after again serving as a consistent force in the heart of the Cosmos defense. Mendes started in 28 games and helped New York post the second-best defensive record in the league. The center back, who also chipped in with two goals, earned Player of the Week honors once and Team of the Week honors twice.
Personally, I'm a little surprised that Mendes wasn't joined by Ayoze, as the left back was outstanding for most of the campaign. Roversio and Marcos Senna also had excellent seasons, though both missed enough time due to injury that their absences were understandable.
Congratulations to Carlos, and hopefully that Best XI award won't be the last hardware Mendes hoists this season.
