The New York Cosmos needed a win in San Antonio to remain in the hunt for the North American Soccer League's top playoff seed, and while it looked as if that might not happen for much of the match, Ayoze's set piece wonder strike wound up giving the boys in green the result that they needed. Unsurprisingly, then, the Spanish fullback was recognized by the league for his contributions to the victory, being named to the NASL Team of the Week:
Ayoze (New York Cosmos) – With the Cosmos chasing the top seed in The Championship, the Spanish defender put in a top-class performance. Strong at the back, Ayoze scored a stunner from a set piece, which proved to be the winner, as New York defeated the San Antonio Scorpions, 2-1.
The Cosmos still need a win at home against the Tampa Bay Rowdies to remain in the hunt for the top spot, and Tampa needs a win to ensure that they wind up in the playoffs at all. Thanks in large part to Ayoze, this weekend ought to be interesting.
