Cosmos come up big, defeat Edmonton 3-0

The New York Cosmos needed a win against FC Edmonton on Sunday, and they delivered one in emphatic fashion. The boys in green were as dominant as I can remember seeing them in a very long time, crushing the playoff hopeful Eddies by a 3-0 score, that was probably more lopsided than the margin indicates.

New York got off to a great start early on, as fan favorite Sebastian Guenzatti put the home side ahead. Raul doubled the lead just before the halftime whistle, burying an Ayoze corner with such force that it actually dislodged the net.

The second half saw the Cosmos continue to control the play, though they found a third goal tough to come by. Substitute Ruben Bover put the match to bed with his first goal for the senior team, however, chipping an absolute beauty over Matt Van Oekel to erase any doubt.

Watching the 'mos put three past Edmonton was a welcome sight indeed, as not only did the victory move New York back atop the NASL table (for the moment, they've played one more match), but it also closed the gap in goal difference, which could be just as important as the victory when the season comes to a close.

The boys now have a two-week break, before playing two more must win matches if they wish to have any hope of the top seed. Rest up, boys, there's some big ones ahead.
