New York Cosmos confirm Gio Savarese extension

John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Cosmos confirmed on Wednesday that they've agreed to a contract extension with head coach Gio Savarese. Savarese has been with the club since they began play in 2013, and has led them to an NASL title and a semifinal appearance in his two years in charge. As usual with the club, no details of the extension were revealed, but reports yesterday indicates that the deal will be for more than one season.

Along with Savarese, assistant coaches Carlos Llamosa and Alecko Eskandarian have signed new deals, as have goalkeeper coach Guillermo Valencia and fitness coach Simone Lucchesi.

The news of the extension comes on the same day as the New York Red Bulls released popular head coach Mike Petke, to replace him with Jesse Marsch. Congratulations to Gio and the staff on the new deals, all of Cosmos Country will be looking forward to watching the club continue to grow over the next several seasons.
