New York Cosmos nearing deal for Paraguayan defender Samuel Caceres

John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday, Bruno Pont reported that the Cosmos have interest in Paraguayan defender Samuel Caceres:

As usual, Dave Martinez was quick to follow up on the report, and was able to confirm that the two sides are working on a deal. Martinez notes that the deal is still contingent on the two clubs reaching an agreement over compensation, but one would hope that's something that could be worked out relatively easily.

Caceres is a 6'0" tall center back, who turns 26 before the season kicks off. He'd presumably be there as competition for the soon to be 35-year old Carlos Mendes and injury-plagued Roversio, who only have the versatile Hunter Gorskie as cover as things currently stand.

There's no word on whether the club's interest in Caceres is in addition to their pursuit of Nana Attakora, or if it's going to be one or the other at the back. There's certainly room for both, however, as the club only has five defensive players under contract at the moment.
