Both the New York Cosmos and Colorado Rapids have confirmed today that forward Danny Mwanga will be joining the NASL champions for the remainder of the 2014 season. The Rapids press release confirms that the club will have the option to recall the player until the September 15 roster freeze, but head coach Gio Savarese has noted in the past that MLS rules require this stipulation, and that the Cosmos always look for a verbal agreement that it won't be exercised before taking a player on loan.
Speaking of Savarese, he had the following to say about the Mwanga addition:
"We’ve been looking to make additions to our options at forward and we believe Danny provides that. Danny is an experienced player who is still young and we are looking forward to having him join us."
Mwanaga had the following to say abut joining the club:
"This is a great opportunity for me in joining the Cosmos. I’m looking forward to getting started in training with the guys, working hard and hopefully contributing to the team’s title defense."
Here's hoping that Mwanga manages to live up to the hype that made him a number one overall draft pick during his time in the NASL, and helps add some much needed goals down the stretch. Those goals could well be the difference between retaining the NASL title and watching somebody else celebrating in November.
