Danny Mwanga set for New York Cosmos loan

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Cosmos are nearing an agreement which would see them acquire 23-year old striker Danny Mwanga for the remainder of the season. Here's the statement released by his current club, the Colorado Rapids:

Colorado Rapids are in the final stages of executing a loan agreement, which would send 23-year-old striker Danny Mwanga to New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL). The loan spell would be until the end of the NASL season, though the Rapids could recall Mwanga at any time up to the roster freeze on September 15.

Mwanga has made six appearances this season, including two starts. He joined the Rapids from Portland Timbers in February 2013, in exchange for Colorado's 2015 first round MLS SuperDraft pick.

All MLS loans include a recall option, though Gio Savarese has noted in the past that the Cosmos won't consider a move without assurance that the recall won't be exercised. There's only a few weeks before the MLS roster freeze anyway, so it's likely that a recall situation wouldn't come up regardless.

Mwanga is a former number one overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft, the first ever selection of the Philadelphia Union. In 2012, Mwanga was traded to the Portland Timbers, before joining the Rapids in exchange for a first round pick.
