Cosmos learn possible fifth round U.S. Open Cup opponents

A potential road trip awaits

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

The Cosmos and Red Bulls will square off shortly with a spot in the fifth round of the U.S. Open Cup on the line. On Tuesday, the fifth round draw was held, and both clubs learned who they'd be facing if they advance.

The winner of the New York derby will face the winner of the fourth round tie between the Philadelphia Union and the Harrisburg City Islanders. Should that winner be the Union, either club will be traveling to Philadelphia for the game. Should the Islanders advance, both the Cosmos and Red Bulls would end up hosting. In the NASL club's case, that game would be held at St. John's, site of the victory over the Brooklyn Italians.

At the moment, no date has been set for either matchup involving the Cosmos. As they still have the very diffidult task of getting by the New York MLS side in order to make that matchup reality, that's probably for the best.
