Cosmos learn first ever U.S. Open Cup opponent

The third round draw was completed on Wednesday afternoon

Mike Zarrilli

When the New York Cosmos make their U.S. Open Cup debut later this month, they now know the two teams that they'll potentially be playing. The Brooklyn Italians of the NPSL will be facing the Jersey Express of the PDL in round two, and the winner of that match will face the Cosmos in round three.

As reported earlier, the Cosmos won't be able to host a round three match at Hofstra due to scheduling constraints, but they have been selected as the home side for the round three affair. The match will be played at St. John's University's Belson Stadium, in Queens NY.

Should the Cosmos advance beyond round three, they'll have the possibility of drawing an MLS side. The U.S. Open Cup tries to keep the early round travel to a minimum, so should they draw a D1 side, odds are it will be one from the northeast. Getting by round three would be a stat though, especially with the way the club have been performing in front of goal of late.
