The Cosmos learn their first opponent in the U.S. Open Cup

The Brooklyn Italians are up first for the Cosmos

Mike Zarrilli

Last night saw the Brooklyn Italians and Jersey Express play their second round U.S. Open Cup tie, with the winner set to face the New York Cosmos in the third round. That winner wound up being the side from Brooklyn, who will now face the NASL club from New York. The Cosmos will be hosting the contest, but with Hofstra's Shuart stadium unavailable, they're going to be playing at St. John's.

The Italians have been in existence since 1949, and currently play in the NPSL. At the moment, they sit tied with the New York Red Bull U23 side atop the Atlantic conference, having earned 23 points from their 10 games played. They've scored 22 goals while conceding eight, good for a +14 goal differential.

The game will be played Wednesday, May 28 at 7:30 pm EDT. Tickets went on sale for the contest this morning, and range from $10-15.
