The countdown to the 2014 NASL season continues, with just seven days remaining until the Cosmos kick off their title defense against the Atlanta SIlverbacks. For all of the history that the New York Cosmos have, they've never had an all-star wear the number seven shirt. They've had some excellent players wear that number over the years, with players like Dennis Tueart, Romerito, and Tony Field all playing multiple seasons in that jersey.
Last season, Ayoze did a remarkable job for the club once he was asked to take over at left back. Given a full season worth of games, it's not hard to believe he'll be one of the frontrunners for a spot on the NASL best XI squad.
The number seven does have some significance for Cosmos fans though, as the legendary Giorgio Chinaglia twice found the back of the net seven times in a match. The attached video is the complete, 60-minute, 14-10 victory in which Giorgio accomplished the feat for the second time.
This match against the Chicago Sting was the first contest of the 1981 indoor season, coming just after the Sting defeated New York to win the 1981 Soccer Bowl. Chinaglia's other seven goal outing came against Tulsa during the 1980 NASL playoffs.
