Just nine days to go until the season kicks off, so here's some classic New York number nine

Let's celebrate with some Giorgio Chinaglia!

There are just nine days remaining before the 2014 spring season kicks off against the Atlanta Silverbacks, at Hofstra's Shuart Stadium. The club faced the Silverbacks in each of their last two games of the 2013 season, winning the season finale 1-0 in Atlanta before winning the Soccer Bowl by the same scoreline just one week later.

The Cosmos have a legend that wore number 9, center forward Giorgio Chinaglia. The Italian marksman is the most prolific goalscorer to ever play in North America, and his incredible 1980 season was perhaps the finest of his sensational career.

Chinaglia joined the Cosmos in 1976, and scored an incredible 242 goals in his 254 NASL regular season and playoff games. Those totals include a remarkable playoff run in 1980 which saw the forward score 18 times in seven contests. He was a six-time NASL all star, and was league MVP during the 1981 season.
