The Vancouver Whitecaps announced several roster moves today, one of which involves a New York Cosmos player. Andre Lewis was sent on loan from the MLS side to USL PRO club Charleston Battery.
For those unfamiliar, Lewis was drafted 7th overall in the MLS Superdraft by Vancouver, but it came out several days later that the Jamaican had agreed to a deal with the Cosmos between the MLS combine and the draft. The issue was quickly settled between the sides, with the Cosmos agreeing to allow Lewis to head on loan to Vancouver for the 2014 season.
Lewis is an undeniable talent, but he looked very raw when the Cosmos took him to Spain on trial last November. It was a bit hard to see him getting significant minutes in New York with options like Diomar Diaz and Paulo Mendes available, so seeing Vancouver talking up his first team chances was more than a little surprising.
Now it looks as if Lewis will get plenty of chances to polish his game at a more appropriate level, and hopefully he'll show off the massive potential that saw him picked so high. That can only be a good thing for New York, regardless of where he ends up in the future.
