Messing Around: Seattle draws with Portland, USWNT routs Russia

Non-Cosmos news and links for February 9, 2014

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Saturday was a busy day for soccer, but wasn't a big day for the Cosmos or the NASL. Quite a few MLS sides had preseason friendlies, as did the USWNT. Here are a few of the highlights from the world of sport yesterday:

Sticking to the status quo

FC Edmonton are expecting the center of their defense to be the strength of their squad in 2014, with several academy players providing depth for Albert Watson and Kareem Moses.

Seattle and Portland play to a draw

Anytime the Timbers meet the Sounders it's fun to watch, and yesterday was no exception even though it didn't count.

USWNT team dominates Russia, winning 7-0

MLS sides weren't the only ones playing games that had no meaning, though this one wasn't particularly competitive.

Timothy Chandler tears Meniscus, out until April

Chandler is one of the many possibilities for the US World Cup squad at fullback, but will need to return to form fairly quickly if he hopes to be on the plane to Brazil.

Liverpool score early, score often against Arsenal

I really thought this one would have been the best game of the weekend, but unless you happen to be a Liverpool fan, you probably weren't captivated by the match.

USA, Canada women win in Sochi

The women's hockey tournament is underway, and the gold medal favorites both started the way we'd expect.
