Preseason training is underway on Long Island, and despite waking up to fresh snow this morning, it's not hard to start thinking about warmer weather ahead. Yesterday saw quite a bit of news from NASL rivals, as well as some other interesting stories from around the sporting world.
Lucas Paulini returns to Atlanta
Paulini has spent his entire professional career in Atlanta, and will probably be in the starting lineup when the Silverbacks open their season in New York. April 13 can't come soon enough.
Richard Menjivar joins San Antonio
The Scorpions may have lost Hans Denissen to the Cosmos earlier this offseason, but yesterday they announced the signing of another 2013 Best XI player, Richard Menjivar from Atlanta. They also traded for Walter Restrepo this winter, so the Scorpions should be an improved team in 2014.
Connor Tobin signs with Carolina
Tobin has been with Minnesota United for the past two seasons, but moved to Carolina on a multi-year deal. Minnesota recently added Thiago to help shore up their defense, which should help cover for the loss of Tobin. Carolina boasted a solid unit already in 2013, and the addition should make them tough nut to crack this season.
Rowdies release preseason schedule
While many NASL clubs are playing MLS sides during the preseason, Tampa Bay has opted to play four games against NCAA opposition in addition to the Tampa Marauders.
Didier Drogba rumored to be heading to Seattle
As a big Drogba fan, this rumor makes me happy. Seattle does come to New York after the World Cup comes to a close, They do so at 11:30 am on a weekend when the boys in green are out of town as well. If this one comes true, I guess I'll be going to a Red Bulls game this year.
The joys of father-daughter baseball card collecting
Howard Megdal wrote a fantastic piece about the joys of sharing a hobby with his daughter. If you ever collected baseball cards as a kid, it's definitely worth a read.
A field guide to pooping in Sochi
We're going to be reading lots of stories about Russia in the next few weeks, so why not start with the essentials?
Video of the day
Today's video is not in English, but Zlatan is amazing in any language
