Messing Around: Portilla joins Indy Eleven ahead of preseason in Arizona, Alves resigns with Ft. Lauderdale

Non-Cosmos news and links for Monday, February 3, 2014

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Messing Around is going to be a daily feature here at Twice a Cosmo where we look at some interesting stories that might not directly involve the Cosmos. Here, you'll find relevant news from around the NASL, as well as the occasional stories from other leagues, or even other sports. We're also going to try to find you a video of the day, which we'll embed at the end of the post.

Indy Eleven head to Arizona for preseason matches

One of the league's two new sides is heading to Arizona to face some MLS competition. The Eleven will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC, Sporting Kansas City, and the Portland Timbers on their travels.

Strikers re-sign Brazilian defender Rafael Alves

The 29-year old Alves joined the Strikers ahead of the 2013 fall season, playing the full 90 minutes in all 14 of Ft. Lauderdale's games. During the spring, the Strikers conceded more goals than any other NASL club. They were much better during the fall, allowing four fewer goals despite playing two more games.

Cristian Portilla joins Indy Eleven

The former Racing Santander and Sporting Gijon man announced that he'll be joining one of the new NASL sides, and may join the club in Arizona.

Seattle Seahawks win the Super Bowl

New York City proved to be an absolutely perfect place to host the game, but unfortunately, it wasn't a very competitive contest. Luckily, Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers helped to make us all forget just how poor a game it was.

Video of the day:

After a less than competitive Super Bowl, why don't you take a few minutes and enjoy the highlights of one of the most exciting games from the past year. Naturally, I'm speaking of the Cosmos' thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
