Gio Savarese led the Cosmos to the 2013 NASL fall championship, before leading the club to a victory in the Soccer Bowl against Atlanta. He was rewarded for the club's strong showing with an extension in October, and will now have a new title to go along with his contract.
Savarese has been named as the club's sporting director, in addition to being the head coach. His new position will place him in charge of all scouting and player personnel decisions on top of his coaching duties.
The Cosmos made some other moves, extending assistant coaches Carlos Llamosa, Alecko Eskandarian, Guillermo Valencia, and Simone Lucchesi. Luke Sassano was promoted to assistant sporting director, while Jack Gaeta was named manager of team operations. As usual with the Cosmos, the terms of the deals were not disclosed.
After bringing back most of the squad that had so much success in 2013, keeping the coaching staff intact made sense. Here's hoping they enjoy the same sort of success in 2014.
