Cosmos fail to reach agreement with Diomar Diaz for 2015

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Cosmos announced on Friday that they had come to an agreement with both Andres Flores and Jimmy Mulligan to remain with the club going forward, but also announced that they'd be parting ways with a player that's been with the club since they began play in 2013. Diomar Diaz was a key component during the 2013 title side, but saw his role diminish during the 2014 season, at least partly due to injuries.

Diaz's departure, combined with the departure of Danny Mwanga and Jemal Johnson do leave the club in need of more attackers, though new signing Lucky Mkosana will help with depth in that area. I'd imagine the club will still look to add more options for the wide areas of the midfield in the coming weeks. The departure of Diaz will free up an international roster slot which will almost certainly be filled before the season kicks off.

Diaz scored five times in 13 appearances in 2013, but only produced a single goal in his 13 showings during the 2014 season. Hopefully he's fully fit again in 2015, and can contribute something similar to what he did during his first season in NY with whatever club he latches on with.
