Santos to retire Pele's #10 against the Cosmos, according to reports

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

I was somewhat surprised to learn this morning that Pele's iconic #10 hadn't been retired by his longtime club, Santos. An AS report on Saturday is claiming that the club is planning to do so against the New York Cosmos though, in a friendly honoring the greatest player in the history of either club.

AS is quoting one of the candidates for the vacant presidential role at Santos, Nabil Khaznadar, with the following:

"We want to play a friendly between Santos and the Cosmos as a homage to Pele and at the same time, to retire his number 10 so that it stays in our memory. The number 10 shirt of Santos would only be his."

The report doesn't have many specifics, but does claim that the friendly is expected to be played 'in the coming months'. Last November, the Cosmos took on Marcos Senna's long time club, Villarreal, in a testimonial match.

Should the match come to pass, it ought to be a fairly high-profile affair that would benefit both sides financially.
