Their season got off to a bumpy start, but the San Antonio Scorpions finished the 2014 season as NASL champions, after defeating the Fort Lauderdale Strikers by a score of 2-1 on Saturday evening. Two goals in a five minute span were enough to secure the title for San Antonio, and the victory was the only contest of the playoffs which was decided in 90 minutes.
Rafael Castillo opened the scoring with a spectacular bicycle kick in the 70th minute, before Billy FOrbes doubled the lead just five minutes later. The Strikers got one back in the 79th minute, but despite creating quite a few quality chance in the dying moments of the season, they were unable to find a second straight stoppage time equalizer to force 30 minutes of extra play.
Congratulations to the Scorpions, who defeated the Cosmos in all four meetings the club had during the 2014 season.
